Jonas Salk (1914-1995). For the first half of the 20th century, poliomyelitis, also known as infantile paralysis, was one of the most dreaded diseases to attack young people. By 1955 American physician and researcher Jonas Salk had developed a vaccine that almost eradicated the disease in the United States and other developed countries.

Jonas Edward Salk was born in New York City on October 28, 1914. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1934 and earned his doctorate in medicine from New York University's College of Medicine in 1939. While in medical school he had worked with Thomas Francis Jr. on killed-virus immunology studies. In 1942 he joined a group at the University of Michigan working on a vaccine against influenza. The vaccine was perfected in 1953.

In 1947 Salk became associate professor of bacteriology and head of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. There he began working on the polio vaccine. Three viruses caused polio, and a vaccine had to be effective against all of them. By 1952 Salk had developed such a vaccine and conducted field tests on children. His findings were published in 1953, and a mass field test was done the next year.

On April 12, 1955, the vaccine was released for use in the United States. In 1957 Salk was named professor of experimental medicine at Pittsburgh, and in 1963 he went to San Diego as head of the Institute (later named the Salk Institute) for Biological Studies. In 1977 Salk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died on June 23, 1995, in La Jolla, California.

New challenge
1 There has been a huge increase in the number of people interested in researching their ancestry, and genealogy has become a multi-billion-dollar industry. A British government ancestry site recently received more than 50 million hits, and access had to be restricted to cope with the demand. Due to this surge in interest, we have decided that our library records department will need to be reorganized in terms of staffing. In the past, we have received occasional requests for assistance in tracing documentation relating to family and business histories, but in the last two years the number of requests has reached a level that cannot be addressed by the existing staff alone. We are currently in the process of recruiting two additional specialists.

Family history
2 Traditionally, genealogy was thought of as finding out about your family tree. The idea was to find out who came before you, going as far back in history as possible. However, nowadays it is more common to want to find out as much detail about the people as possible, so what was a purely factual quest has become a historical process. This is an area that we are able to address, as our records include diaries and other documents that contain information and clues that can help build a more complete picture.

Medicine and law
3 In the past, most genealogical searches could be classified as vanity searches, because the motivation was to prove family nobility. However, this is no longer the case. One of the driving forces of the increased interest in genealogy has been in relation to illness. Genetics are now recognized as significant in predicting the likelihood of suffering from many types of diseases, including cancer and heart disease. There may also be a legal dimension to the searches, because inheritance claims often rely on ancestry. In both of these cases, we, as a department, must be particularly careful in relation to possible lawsuits, and we will be providing legal training to all relevant staff.

Naming conventions
4 The key starting point for any genealogical search is through surnames. Although first names, maiden names, and middle names are all significant, it is through surnames that most family history can be traced. For this reason, the department will be updating all of our databases with surname information. This is a skilled job, as spellings are often changed on documents as a result of clerical error. All staff will be involved in this process after appropriate training.

Commercial aspects
5 As mentioned earlier, genealogy is no longer a vanity hobby but has become a lucrative business. As a nonprofit organization, it is not our intention to compete in this market; however, we will need to cover the costs of increased staffing and training, so we will be charging a nominal fee for our services. The finance department is currently assessing the charges, which will be detailed in our next report. The fees will be reviewed on an annual basis.

Unfortunately, pollution is like air: it’s everywhere! Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment that can cause damage and harm to humans, animals, and the environment. It takes on a number of different forms, from chemicals and garbage to something as seemingly innocent as light or noise.

Pollution comes from a variety of sources. In addition, it alters, changes, and even destroys a variety of places. For example, exhaust from cars pollutes the air. When it rains, runoff from fertilizers and pesticides, which farmers use to help crops grow, can pollute the water in oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams. Garbage dumped in landfills is not only an eyesore, but also a source of harmful gases that can damage the earth’s atmosphere. Light pollution, which comes in the form of bright streetlights or signs, disrupts the view of the night sky. Noise pollution caused by cars, trucks, and machines interrupts the natural sounds of the world around us, such as birds singing or leaves rustling.

The types of pollution and their effects vary greatly. At the same time, however, they are related; each type of pollution affects the other types. An example of the connection between different types of pollution is acid rain. Acid rain is caused mostly by sulfur or nitrogen emissions given off by sources such as car exhaust and the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. These harmful chemicals rise into the atmosphere where they react with other compounds and then fall as an acidic form of rain, sleet, or snow. Acid rain damages plants and buildings, contaminates soil and water, and has a negative effect on animals, fish, and even humans.

Pollution has other effects, too. Breathing toxic air or drinking polluted water can cause humans and animals to develop health problems that can be serious and sometimes deadly. The deaths of too many members of a certain species of animal can upset the local ecosystem, or the area in which they live. As a result, weather patterns and climates can also change.

Though pollution is everywhere, there are ways to help prevent it. By walking or riding bikes—instead of driving cars—people can help decrease air pollution. People can also buy and eat organic foods to support farmers that do not use fertilizers on their crops. It is also a good idea to take old things that people intend to throw away and find new ways to use them. A great way to help the environment is to recycle. Save items like used paper, glass and plastic bottles, and metal cans. Then, take them to a recycling center where they can be turned into new products to be used again. Some cities and towns even have recycling programs in place so all you have to do is leave your recyclable items on the curb on a certain day each week. It doesn’t get much easier to help the environment and reduce pollution than that!
