The two authors use different ways of expressing a similar theme. Dwight Okita and Sandra Cisneros both present a common theme of race, culture, and ethnic background. Overall in their stories, they each get to the theme in a different way while getting a clear theme across. In, "Response to Executive Order 9066." the overall theme is racism and prejudices. The fourteen-year-old girl has a best friend who one day makes a racist and prejudice comment to her. The comment being, ""You’re trying to start a war,” she said, “giving secrets away to the Enemy, Why can’t you keep your big mouth shut?”". This comment made the fourteen year old girl shocked and left with no words. The author shows how the fourteen-year-old girl's best friend is being prejudice and  takes offense by the fourteen-year-old girl. For example, when the fourteen-year-old girl walked in her Geography classroom, her friend was no longer sitting next to her. In the text it states, "I saw Denise today in Geography class. She was sitting on the other side of the room." Overall, the author shows that the theme is racism by using prejudices of racist comments. In, "Mericans" the overall theme is race, culture, and ethnic background. The story talks about siblings who are at church with their grandmother not paying attention in mass. The children don't understand why the grandmother is so mean yet she still prays for everyone, living or passed. The author tells us this by saying, "The awful grandmother knits the names of the dead and the living into one long prayer fringed with the grandchildren born in that barbaric country with its barbaric ways." The grandmother doesn't like that the children don't understand and appreciate their culture. When the grandmother sends them outside for not paying attention, a woman calls one of the children over to take a photo in Spanish. When one child speaks English, the woman speaking Spanish says, “But you speak English!” to which the brother replied “Yeah,” my brother says, “we’re Mericans.” The children don't practice their culture or even pay attention to it. Overall, the author shows the theme is culture, ethnic background, and race in many ways. Both authors use the theme of race, culture, and ethnic background in many ways. Both authors use a short narrative to tall their stories. While they are talking about different races, they are also talking about ethnic background in different ways. In Sandra Cisneros's story “Mericans”, they are forgetting the ways of their culture and what it should mean to them. Instead of practicing their culture, they are picking up the ways of this country culture. Whereas in, “In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese Descent Must Report to Relocation Centers”, the fourteen-year-old girl is being blamed and judged for her ethnic background and culture.
