What is your interpretation of the story?

In an effort to catch a big fish, Santiago makes the decision to cast his line farther than the other fishermen. His strategy succeeds, and he spends three days attempting to land an 18-foot marlin. He does succeed in catching it, but as he travels back to his house, sharks begin to chip away at the marlin's flesh until there are just bones left. Santiago ultimately returns with nothing more than the marlin's skeleton. The old man is saddened by this, but the town is impressed when they see the huge skeleton.

The tale demonstrates that it's possible to be the outcast and accomplish great things. Additionally, it demonstrates that your own self-worth should take precedence over other people's perceptions.
