Answer 1

Answer:

My dear Rakesh,

You will be glad to learn that I have taken admission in central school, Janakpuri. Life in the school is interesting and enjoyable. The school complex is in a huge and splendid building.

The school timings are from 9 in the morning to 4 in the evening. We go there by school bus so I am always punctual.

The Principal is very strict about punctuality. There are eight periods daily. We remain busy in all the periods except recess. The teachers are helpful and nice. They take so much interest in teaching us that I do not miss any period. There is very strict discipline about uniform, behaviour and cleanliness. There is a very good atmosphere in the school.

I have made many new friends. Atul is my best friend. We help each other in studies. How are you getting on your studies? You must be working hard. I often miss my old school and friends. Remember me to Sahith, Anuj and Sameer with lots of love and remembrance. Please pay my regards to your parents.

Yours Sincerely,

Prakash

During a Socratic Circle -

A: participants should question the motives of others.
B: participants should allow the most outspoken people in the group to debate.
C: participants should modify their thinking when necessary.
D: Participants should try to get others to agree with them.

Answers

Answer:

C: participants should modify their thinking when necessary.

Explanation:

The "Socrates Method" is a strategy of teaching which allows the participants to use their minds even when they haven't read about the topic in the discussion.

This is not considered as a debate, thus it makes choice B incorrect. It also doesn't include the need to persuade other people to agree with what you're saying, thus this makes choice C incorrect. Rather, participants have to be open-minded by not questioning the motives of others.

The Socrates Method is concerned about the participants way of thinking, thus they are given an ample time to think and they can also modify it when necessary. The teacher should also be prepared with many questions in order to drive the conversation among the students.

Answer:

The Socratic Circle guidelines ask participants to ask questions, acknowledge what others have shared, share ideas, and be willing to change their minds.

The first step in explicating a quote is
A: knowing why it was said.
B: understanding the context.
C: thinking about the speaker.
D: analyzing it word-by-word.

Answers

Answer:

analyzing it word-by-word.

Explanation:

To start explicating a quote, break it down into its denotative meaning.

The first step in explicating a quote is: D)analyzing it word-by-word. Hence, option D) is the correct answer.

What do you mean by explicating a quote?

To find out what a quote means, it is important to consider all of the following aspects of the quotation:

framework of the quoteexact meaning of the quote ideas of the quote relationship of the quote to the work and lastly, total explication of the quote (Make couple of statements about the quote and include fragments of the quotation in the analysis)

A poetry explication is a short analysis that describes the meanings and relationships of the words in a quotation. it is better to be overly explicit than to leave the quote dangling and leave the reader in doubt.

A quote doesn't support your ideas unless you analyze it properly and link it to your thesis. After the quote,  make sure write few sentences explaining what the quote means. A quotation requires three parts to support an argument that are lead-in, citation, and analysis.

Summarizing quote involves putting the main ideas in your own words, including just the main points. It is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to original source. Summaries are meant to be shorter than the original but give a broad overview of the source.

from “Mother Tongue”
by Amy Tan
Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions of the limited English speaker.
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of empirical evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. In this guise, I was forced to ask for information or even to complain and yell at people who had been rude to her. One time it was a call to her stockbroker in New York. She had cashed out her small portfolio and it just so happened we were going to go to New York the next week, our very first trip outside California. I had to get on the phone and say in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.”
And my mother was standing in the back whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me check, already two weeks late. So mad he lie to me, losing me money.”
And then I said in perfect English, “Yes, I’m getting rather concerned. You had agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”
Then she began to talk more loudly. “What he want, I come to New York tell him front of his boss, you cheating me.” And I was trying to calm her down, make her be quiet, while telling the stockbroker, “I can’t tolerate any more excuses. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I’m in New York next week.” And sure enough, the following week there we were in front of this astonished stockbroker, and I was sitting there red-faced and quiet, and my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting at his boss in her impeccable broken English.

How does dialogue in the hobbit allow the characters to express their points of view

Answers

Answer:

The readers understanding would change without different points of view shown through dialogue because without characters point of view shown through dialogue there is nothing there to form the readers opinion and understanding of the characters feelings and thoughts. In the Hobbit, dialogue is very important for the readers understanding. For example, Bilbo Baggins shares his thoughts, feelings, and ideas throughout his adventures, along with many other characters. Without Bilbo expressing his point of view through dialogue, the reader would have no idea what he is feeling, along with all of the other characters, Dialogue builds a picture in the readers head and without that picture the reader won't have an accurate idea of what the author intended the reader to think.

A room in Washington Square South. By the light of a candle, a young man in tousled hair and dressing gown is writing furiously at a little table. A clock within strikes seven.

A door at the back opens, and a young woman looks in, sleepily. She frowns. The young man looks up guiltily.

SHE. What are you doing?

HE. (innocently) Writing.

SHE. So I see. (She comes in, and sits down. It may be remarked that a woman's morning appearance, in dishabille, is a severe test of both looks and character; she passes that test triumphantly. She looks at the young man, and asks) – Poetry?

SHE. (continues to look inquiry).

HE. (finally) A letter. . . .

SHE. (inflexibly) – To whom?

HE. (defiantly) To my wife!

SHE. Oh! That's all right. I thought perhaps you were writing to your father.

HE. (bitterly) My father! Why should I write to my father? Isn't it enough that I have broken his heart and brought disgrace upon him in his old age –

SHE. Disgrace? Nonsense! Anybody might be named as a co-respondent in a divorce case.

HE. Not in Evanston, Illinois. Not when you are the local feature of a notorious Chicago scandal. Not when your letters to the lady are published in the newspapers. – Oh, those letters!

SHE. Were they such incriminating letters, Harold?

HAROLD. Incriminating? How can you ask that, Isabel? They were perfectly innocent letters, such as any gentleman poet might write to any lady poetess. How was I to know that a rather plain-featured woman I sat next to at a Poetry Dinner in Chicago was conducting a dozen love-affairs?
