1. Compare and contrast Utilitarianism and Deontology over the question of torture. Is torture a
reasonable/justifiable last resort during a national security crisis? What would a Utilitarian (like Bentham)
argue? What would Kant argue? What is your opinion? When discussing your opinion, you should also
include a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of both the utilitarian and deontological positions.

Answers

Answer:

- Compare and contrast Utilitarianism and Deontology over the question of torture.

Utilitarianism revolves around the concept of “the end justifies the means,” while deontology works on the concept “the end does not justify the means.” Utilitarianism is the principle that the correct form of action be taken to benefit the greatest number of people.  Deontology is defined as the area of ethics involving the responsibility, moral duty and commitment. Both utilitarianism and deontology deal with the ethics and consequences of one’s actions and behavior despite the outcome.

- Is torture a reasonable/justifiable last resort during a national security crisis?

Torture and abusive interrogation tactics are illegal under U.S. law, international law, and international human rights treaties. Torture is prohibited under federal law, as are lesser forms of detainee abuse such as cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment is prohibited at all times and in all circumstances.

- What would a Utilitarian (like Bentham) argue? What would Kant argue?

A Utilitarianism such as Jeremy Bentham, he would argue that an action (or type of action) is right if it tends to promote happiness or pleasure and wrong if it tends to produce unhappiness or pain—not just for the performer of the action but also for everyone else affected by it. Kant would say that the only virtue that can be unqualifiedly good is a good will. Kant argues that a person is good or bad depending on the motivation of their actions and not on the goodness of the consequences of those actions.

- What is your opinion? When discussing your opinion, you should also include a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of both the utilitarian and deontological positions.

I agree with Bentham's argument because, broadly speaking, Bentham would first consider the outcomes of both actions and evaluate how much pleasure or pain either action will cause, while Kant would consider the action of killing someone and evaluate if the action is morally “right” or “wrong. Bentham’s argument that protecting the welfare (happiness) of the greatest number of people, I suggest, will ultimately win out because we live in an era when governments and electorates subscribe to neoliberal economic ideologies. Bentham’s greatest happiness theory will enable the business, industry and education sectors to open-up for business as normal. Of course politics and self-protection will dictate how quickly normalcy is resumed, but the need to bring happiness to the maximum number of people will ultimately determine the strategy of government because elections are determined by the greater number of voters who feel happiest, not by the greater number of voters who are morally and ethically driven as Kant's theory suggests.

The ______ represents potential counterarguments, at times proffered during the initial argument.

Answers

Answer:

The rebuttal represents potential counterarguments, at times proffered during the initial argument.

Explanation:

A rebuttal is a counterargument or a denial of the argument made by someone/ the opponent's party. In other words, we can say it is the chance to rebut and challenge the argument made, providing counterarguments to weaken the main argument.

In an argument, be it a debate or even a court case, the rebuttal represents a potential counterargument chance which can at times be extended or offered during the argument. This is when the second party has the chance to prove to the audience or public that the arguments made by the first party are false or has loopholes. We can say a rebuttal allows the second party to point out the mistakes of the first party's arguments.

Which event made it clear that the Civil War was a fight to abolish slavery in the United States?
President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation
the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox
the founding of the Confederate States of America
France’s decision not to send aid to the Confederacy

Answers

Answer:

The answer is President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Explanation:

Though "contraband" slaves had been declared free, Lincoln continued to insist that this was a war to save the Union, not to free slaves. But by 1862, Lincoln was considering emancipation as a necessary step toward winning the war. The South was using enslaved people to aid the war effort. Black men and women were forced to build fortifications, work as blacksmiths, nurses, boatmen, and laundresses, and to work in factories, hospitals, and armories. In the meantime, the North was refusing to accept the services of black volunteers and freed slaves, the very people who most wanted to defeat the slaveholders. In addition, several governments in Europe were considering recognizing the Confederacy and intervening in the Civil War.

On July 22, 1862, Lincoln showed a draft of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation to his cabinet. It proposed to emancipate the slaves in all rebel areas on January 1, 1863. Secretary of State William H. Seward agreed with the proposal, but cautioned Lincoln to wait until the Union had a major victory before formally issuing the proclamation. Lincoln's chance came after the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam in September of 1862. He issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22. The proclamation warned the Confederate states to surrender by January 1, 1863, or their slaves would be freed.

Some people were critical of the proclamation for only freeing some of the slaves. Others, including Frederick Douglass, were jubilant. Douglass felt that it was the beginning of the end of slavery, and that it would act as a chain reaction within the Confederacy. Yet, he and others feared that Lincoln would give in to pressure from northern conservatives and would fail to keep his promise. Despite the opposition, however, the president remained firm. On January 1, 1863, he issued the final Emancipation Proclamation. With it he officially freed all slaves within the states or parts of states that were in rebellion and not in Union hands.

Read the passage and study the image from Sugar Changed the World.

Slaves were given long, sharp machetes, which would be their equipment—but for some also their weapons—until the harvest was done. The cutters worked brutal, seemingly endless shifts during the harvest—for the hungry mills crushed cane from four in the afternoon to ten the next morning, stopping only in the midday heat. Slaves had to make sure there was just enough cane to feed the turning wheels during every one of those eighteen hours. They worked in teams, a man slashing the cane, a woman binding every twelve stalks into a bundle. According to one report from 1689, each pair of workers was expected to cut and bind 4,200 stalks a day. Exactly how much they cut depended on how much their mill could handle—the cutting must never get a day ahead of the grinding, for then the sugar cane would dry up.

Enslaved people working on a sugar cane plantation. Some people are cutting the cane, others bundle the cane, and another group place the bundles in wagons.

In this illustration by William Clark, enslaved people cut sugar cane.

How does the illustration best help the reader understand the text?

The illustration helps the reader recognize how teams cut and bundled sugar cane.
The illustration helps the reader determine why sugar cane had to be cut so quickly.
The illustration helps the reader observe the hot weather on sugar plantations.
The illustration helps the reader identify sugar-harvesting techniques still used today.

Answers

Answer:

The illustration best helps the reader understand the text because:

A. The illustration helps the reader recognize how teams cut and bundled sugar cane.

Explanation:

"Sugar Changed the World" is a book by authors Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos first published in 2010. The book dives deeply into the history of people and countries and its connection with sugar. It shows how sugar left a bloody trail behind in order to be produced and exported.

After reading the passage and reading the description of the illustration, we can safely say the illustration's purpose is to show how teams of slaves worked while preparing the sugar cane. One team cuts it, the other bundles it, and another places the bundles in wagons.

The passive voice can be seen in a sentence where the subject of the sentence does not perform the action of the verb of the sentence, but suffers the action of that verb.

In this case, you need to know that in a sentence the verb is every word that refers to an action or state, while the subject is the word the verb refers to as the doer of the action, or the person who is suffering the action.

This way, you can write the sentences using the passive voice as follows:
