Most cultures have specific values that they believe in. What is this an example of?
-universal values
-personal values
-group-specific values
-world values
is it C?
This is life skills

Answers

Answer:

C.) Group-specific values

Explanation:

I don't think it is a, because "universal" fits everything. That said, their own values don't fit everyone's "universal values.

I don't think it's b either, because "personal" values would just apply to one person within a culture. This is talking about most cultures, which include not just one person.

Similar to D,  "world values" fit everything. That said, their own values don't fit everyone else's values.

It is C., because this is targeting one specific group, which in this case is a certain culture.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

What are two strategies the speaker uses to develop the point that voluntour opportunities are not legitimate ways to learn about other cultures?

'Advantages and disadvantages of long holidays'

Answers

Answer:

The advantages of long holiday breaks during school are plentiful, but it can also be harmful for the educational process.

Some advantages of having long holidays is relaxation, time with family and friends, extra time to have a nice vacation, and doing regular holiday activities and festivities. Breaks can be helpful for students and staff because it helps relieve stress and rejuvenates them for the rest of the year. Students may also be able to study longer during breaks and be prepared for finals or exams for the end of the semesters, or entrance exams depending on what holiday is being celebrated.

Some disadvantages are missing time in the classroom, it can often make students forgetful, not many students study during breaks, and not many keep up with their learning. Some students are reliable enough to do projects or homework over an extended holiday, but others aren't, and it can really harm their grades. Students may see holiday breaks as full time vacation, and while they should be having fun, they also need to remember that school is important and they should keep learning to help themselves.

Not all breaks are bad, but some students may not be able to keep up with their homework or projects, and that's the disadvantage of holidays.

Hope this helped you out :)

How did Robertino bring back love and happiness to his home?

Answers

Explanation:

Once upon a time, in far-off Italy, there was a little boy whose name was Robertino. He loved his grandfather very much. The little boy and the old man were good friends and spent much time together. Robertino loved to sit on his grandfather’s knee and listen, his brown eyes wide open, to the stories he told him. Grandfather was a wonderful storyteller. And oh, the stories he told! Fairy tales and exciting hunting stories, like the one in which grandfather himself had once caught an eagle. No matter how unreal the stories or the games they played were, the love between these two was real.

Grandfather had come to live with Robertino’s parents when grandmother had died, three years before. Robertino’s mother did not understand the loneliness of the old man. Sometimes she was very impatient with him, especially on those days when his hands shook and he would drop what he was holding.

One night at diner, grandfather lifted his cup to drink his coffee but his poor old hands shook so much that the coffee spilled on the clean white table-cloth. The cup, falling from his hands, broke into many pieces. Robertino’s mother spoke angrily to the old man. Grandfather never said a word in reply, but only looked at her with sadness in his eyes. Robertino was also very unhappy. Poor and dear grandfather!

After that grandfather had to eat all alone at a little table in the kitchen. There was sadness in his eyes when he heard about this new arrangement and sadness in the gentle smile he gave his grandchild. As soon as Robertino finished his dinner he would run into the kitchen to be with the old man he loved so much. And the kitchen to be with the old man he loved so much. And the kitchen becomes a beautiful land where there was no pain and no sadness and where an old man and a little child could move about happily hand in hand.

As time went on, grandfather grew older and weaker, and his hand shook more and more. One night as he sat all alone in the kitchen, his hand shook and he drooped a of soup, and the cup broke into many pieces. Robertino’s parents rushed to the kitchen and saw the spilt soup on the clean floor.

Robertino was upset, for his mother spoke more angrily than she had ever done before, and said the only thing to do was to give the old man a wooden cup. She said, she didn’t want her dishes broken just because he had become so careless.

Suddenly the child went over to the fireplace where his mother had swept the pieces of the cup. Soon the pieces seemed to be whole. Then he took a small piece of wood from the fireplace and began to chip it. He kept his eyes on the earthen cup as thought it were a model.

‘What are you making, Robertino?’ asked his mother fondly. ‘I’m making a wooden cup for you to have when you grow old,’ answer Robertino. Robertino’s mother and father were too ashamed to look into Robertino’s eyes. They took grandfather’s arm and led him back to the dining room, and stood near him and helped him as he ate.

From that time grandfather never ate all alone in the kitchen. He sat in his usual place, next to Robertino, in the dining room.

Robertino was happy again. His grandfather was loved and cared for. Robertino realized that his parents too were experiencing the true happing that loving kindness bring.

Explanation:

Excerpt, Theodore Roosevelt, Inaugural Address
Saturday, March 4, 1905
My fellow-citizens, no people on earth have more cause to be thankful than ours, and this is said reverently, in no spirit of boastfulness in our own strength, but with gratitude to the Giver of Good who has
blessed us with the conditions which have enabled us to achieve so large a measure of well-being and of happiness. To us as a people it has been granted to lay the foundations of our national life in a new
continent. We are the heirs of the ages, and yet we have had to pay few of the penalties which in old countries are exacted by the dead hand of a bygone civilization. We have not been obliged to fight for our
existence against any alien race, and yet our life has called for the vigor and effort without which the manlier and hardier virtues wither away. Under such conditions it would be our own fout if we failed, and the
success which we have had in the past, the success which we confidently believe the future will bring, should cause in us no feeling of ſvanity), but rather a deep and abiding realization of all which lite has
offered us; a full acknowledgment of the responsibility which is ours, and a fixed determination to show that under a free government a mighty people can thrive best, alike as regards the things of the body and
the things of the soul
Much has been given us, and much will rightfully be expected from us. We have duties to others and duties to ourselves, and we can shirk neither. We have become a great nation, forced by the fact of its
greatness into relations with the other nations of the earth, and we must behave as beseems a people with such responsibilities. Toward all other nations, large and small, our attitude must be one of cordial and
Sincere friendship. We must show not only in our words, but in our deeds, that we are earnestly desirous of securing their good will by acting toward them in a spirit of just and generous recognition of all their
nights. But justice and generosity in a nation, as in an individual, count most when shown not by the weak but by the strong. While ever careful to refrain from wrongdoing others, we must be no less insistent
that we are not wronged ourselves. We wish peace, but we wish the peace of justice, the peace of righteousness. We wish it because we think it is right and not because we are afraid. No weak nation that acts
manfully and justly should ever have cause to fear us, and no strong power should ever be able to single us out as a subject for insolent aggression
Roosevelt states that "Much has been given us, and much will rightfully be expected from us." What is one example from the text of something that is expected from us?
To achieve so large a measure of well-being and of happiness
To pay few of the penalties which in old countries are exacted by the dead hand
To show that under a free government a mighty people can thrive best

It emphasizes how Columbus's discovery led to the beginning of a new world.

It highlights the end of the long stretch of darkness that Columbus sailed through.

It explains how in the morning light, the men were able to see land.

It creates a mental image of the sun shining through the clouds.

Answer:

B) It emphasizes how Columbus's discovery led to the beginning of a new world.

Explanation:

The stars were used by sailors to help them navigate their way as they were moving across the ocean. In this case, the stars are sources of enlightenment and they help lead the way and show what is ahead.

They help emphasize the discovery of Columbus since it shows the New World was not discovered before but it is through the sailing of Columbus as he was finding the route to the Far East that led to the discovery of the Americas. The Americas was not discovered before meaning there was no light or knowledge of it that describes why the stars are gone. But now the discovery helps shed light on people and they came to know of the Americas.

Columbus

by Joaquin miller

behind him lay the gray Azores,

behind the gates of Hercules;

before him not the ghost of shores,

before him only shoreless seas.

the good mate said: "now must we pray,

for lo! the very stars are gone.

brave Admiral, speak, what shall I say? "

"why, say, 'sail on! sail on! and on! '"

"my men grow mutinous day by day;

my men grow ghastly wan and weak."

the stout mate thought of home; a spray

of salt, a wave washed his swarthy cheek.

"What shall I say, brave Admiral, say,

if we sight naught but seas at dawn? "

"why, you shall say at break of day,

'sail on! sail on! sail on! and on! '"

they sailed and sailed, as winds might blow,

until at last, the blanched mate said:

"why, now not even God would know

should I and all my men fall dead?

these very winds forget their way,

for god from these dread seas is gone.

now speak, brave Admiral, speak and say"—

he said: "sail on! sail on! and on! "

they sailed. they sailed. then spake the mate:

"this mad sea shows his teeth tonight.

he curls his lip, he lies in wait,

with lifted teeth, as if to bite!

brave admiral, say but one good word:

what shall we do when hope is gone? "

the words leaped like a leaping sword:

"sail on! sail on! sail on! and on! "

then, pale and worn, he kept his deck,

and peered through darkness. ah, that night

of all dark nights! and then a speck—

a light! a light! a light! a light!

it grew, a starlit flag unfurled!

it grew to be time's burst of dawn.

he gained a world; he gave that world

its grandest lesson: "on! sail on! "

speech about students have too much of a workload in school

Answers

Answer:

An excessive amount of homework has a negative effect on students' well being. Homework is defined as tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are meant to be carried out during non-school hours. Students who spend a great deal of time on their homework and don't have enough free time for them to relax is considered having too much homework. Satiation, denial of leisure time and community activities, parental interference, and cheating are the negative effects from excessive amount of homework. They can affect the well being of students, which can bring down their happiness, comfort and motivation.

The negative effects on students due to excessive amount of homework are satiation, denial of leisure time and activities, parental interference and cheating. Requiring students to devote too much time to a subject can result in the student's lost of interest in academic material. A student becomes more frustrated with his/her extensive homework that often require constant parental assistance, he/she will loose respect for the value of school and will not look forward to it because of both tiredness and low morale. Students often lose their motivation in school due to repetition of material from homework. Too much homework also generates physical and emotional exhaustion. This can explain their denied access to free time and other extra-curricular activities. Homework limits the time students can spend on leisure time and community activities that can impart important lessons, both academic and nonacademic. Students are so busy doing their homework that they don't have enough free time to relax. Excessive homework can also give students more pressure from parental interference. Parental interference may exert an unhealthy amount of stress on students to complete assignments and perform well, and that may sometimes employ confusing instructional techniques.
