Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

text:was born in the countryside and lived in the village. But a few years ago, our family moved into the city. I study at school in the city, but I spend every summer in the countryside at my grandparents. My grandparents’ farm is located far away from the noisy city.

I like spending my vacations in the countryside because life in the village is very quiet and even relaxed. I know exactly what I need to do every day and that gives me an opportunity to plan my day and enjoy my free time.

What I like most about living in the countryside is that we are close to nature. We can grow our own fruit and vegetables in the garden. My grandparents also cultivate the land for farming purposes, they grow some crops there and look after domestic animals.

There are many more things people can do in the countryside. As for me, I like to walk in the fields and forest. When I walk, I enjoy bird watching and bird singing. And what is more I can take a deep breath as air is not polluted in the countryside. But there are more places for walking and bike riding. There is a possibility to enjoy swimming and fishing in the river nearby. I love my home village a lot!

Answer:

Today is another day that I am unemployed. To make matters worse, the economic and political context do not help to provide a favorable framework for obtaining employment, however, I keep trying to get one. I get up at 7 in the morning, to start looking for jobs on internet portals. Once the available offers are exhausted, my day continues. Now, the delivery of resumes in person begins. I go store by store, premises by premises, handing out my resume to any employer who is available. People judge, see unemployment as something negative, some look at me with pity, others with disdain, others ignore me. What they don't know is that my willpower and my courage are going to achieve my goal, which is none other than to reintegrate myself into the job market.

Once I return to my house, at approximately 1:00 p.m., I have lunch and I dedicate myself to my personal venture of selling carpentry supplies over the internet, a job that gives me the possibility of surviving in this economic crisis caused by the pandemic. Again at 5 pm, I check the job portals on the internet in search of any new offer posted during the day. Once this review is done, my day ends at 6:00 p.m., when I go out to make the deliveries of the supplies that I sold online.

The brief account of a day spent as an unemployed individual may include the following details:

The activities would primarily include looking for the probable cause of his/her unemployment and looking for improving them. This would be followed by surfing online for most probable opportunities to seek employment as soon as possible. The treatment of people towards an unemployed individual includes an inferior outlook and unwanted sympathy that someone is jobless.

When, thanks to the help of Indians of the Wampanoag tribe and after an Indian summer, harvesting was still possible in November, the first celebration of Thanksgiving followed.

Answers

Answer:

I must be chosen for the presidential pardon because I meet the requirements stipulated for that.

Explanation:

The presidential pardon is a way of showing clemency of the public power over certain convicted of crime. In other words, the presidential pardon establishes certain requirements so that some criminals can have their sentences reduced or extinguished. This does not mean that the convict is innocent of his crimes, but it does mean that due to some situations (such as overcrowding in prisons) or due to requirements related to those convicted (such as minor and low-impact crimes) he may have his sentence disregarded.

A purpose is referred to as the central intention of why things are to be done. It helps to identify the progress or achievement in the story about the plot or them. It helps to determine its goal and objective.

Spanish-speaking people lay out memorials for the dead on top of the altar, or ofrenda. When the dead see their living relatives and friends in the afterlife, they will enjoy these items.

People construct ofrendas, or shrines, to the deceased in many homes. These are decorated with lit candles, special food, and anything that the deceased enjoyed when they were still living and find enjoyable.
