Sharks' Teeth
By Langston Carter
The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.
We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

She went up to the vendor man and annoyed him so much he started chasing her. She led him to one of the vendor's houses, where they set up a psychiatrist table and got him to talk about his anger issues. In preparation for a group discussion, read about when Miep Gies found Anne Frank’s diary. Then I walked into Mr. and Mrs. Frank's bedroom. On the floor, amidst the chaos of papers and books, my eye lit on the little red-orange checkered, cloth-bound diary that Anne had received from her father on her thirteenth birthday. I pointed it out to Elli. Obeying my gesture, she leaned down and picked it up for me, putting it into my hands. I remembered how happy Anne had been to receive this little book to write her private thoughts in. I knew how precious her diary was to Anne. My eyes scanned the rubble for more of Anne's writings, and I saw the old accounting books and many more writing papers that Elli and I had given to her when she had run out of pages in the checkered diary. Elli was still very scared, and looked to me for direction. I told Elli, "Help me pick up all Anne's writings." —Anne Frank Remembered, Miep Gies In a group discussion, a participant says, "I would never have picked up the diary. It’s not worth the risk.” How would you respond to share your viewpoint? Write three sentences.
Sample Response:
I disagree because I feel that it was one little thing that Miep Gies could do for her friends. She had already made the decision to risk so much, and she couldn't stop then. I would have taken the diary to hide and hoped to see Anne again to return it to her.

How does the organizational structure of the passage support the author's

Aren't you tired of players, parents, and coaches getting too upset over
kids' sporting events? Although children's sports should be about
learning, exercising, and having a good time, too many people make it
all about winning. For this reason, I think kids' sporting events should
not be scored. The focus would return to building skills and having fun.

no losing team.
A. To inform the reader about the benefits of kids' sports, the author
uses a chronological structure that shares the most important
aspects of participating in Little League.

eliminating scorekeeping would improve attitudes about youth

sporting events, the author uses a chronological structure that
shows scoreless games have become more popular over time.

1. In "Señor Noboa," which statement best describes how Señor Noboa
and his father came to amass their vast property?*
O A. They stumbled into repeated lucky opportunities.
O B. They forced other landowners into selling their land cheaply.
O C. They used their fortunes to spend large sums on massive stretches of land
O D. They purchased the land through lengthy negotiations and complex treaties.
Answer:
In "Señor Noboa," the statement which best describes how Señor Noboa and his father came to amass their vast property is:
B. They forced other landowners into selling their land cheaply.
Explanation:
"Señor Noboa" is a short story by author Raúl Leis. Noboa is the owner of a banana plantation where he exploits the work of thousands of laborers. At the very beginning of the story, the narrator lets us know how Señor Noboa and his father got to own so much land:
During the last fifty years he had extended the lands inherited from his father by squeezing small landholders so they would sell him their small properties for a pittance. This was also how the large properties he had inherited had come into being.
As we can see, Señor Noboa and his father forced those landowners to sell their land cheaply. This is, in fact, a representation of a common and unfortunate practice that took (and still takes) place all over the Americas. Small land owners are constantly forced out of their lands by people with means and power.

Homer opens The Odyssey with an invocation to the Muse of epic poetry and asks for her guidance in telling the story of a man who has experienced many twists and turns of fate and has suffered many hardships. Odysseus, the reader is told, is the only Greek survivor of the Trojan War who has not yet returned home or died trying. He is being held captive on the island Ogygia by the "bewitching nymph" (1.17) Calypso who wants him for her husband. Odysseus has incurred the wrath of Poseidon, god of the sea, by blinding his son Polyphemus the Cyclops. Meanwhile, Odysseus' wife, Penelope, is besieged by suitors at his home in Ithaca.
At a divine council on Mount Olympus, Athena pleads with her father, Zeus, to take pity on Odysseus and allow him to return home. She suggests that Zeus dispatch Hermes to liberate Odysseus from Calypso while Athena visits Ithaca to advise King Odysseus' son, Telemachus.
