How does the following passage (paragraphs 127-129) mainly add to the development of the text?
"Oh, yes," he said, casually as if in answer to a question, "I have electricity. We try to be civilized here."
"Civilized? And you shoot down men?"
A trace of anger was in the general's black eyes, but it was there for but a second; and he said, in his most pleasant manner, "Dear me, what a
righteous young man you are!"
D A. It shows tension between the general's civilized lifestyle and his barbaric hunting practices.
B. It creates commonality and shared experience between the two main characters.
C. It indicates the setting and time period in which the short story takes place.
OD. It reflects General Zaroff and Rainsford's conflicting social statuses.

Answers

Answer:

a

Explanation:

A trace of anger was in the general's black eyes, but it was there for but a second; and he said, in his most pleasant manner, "Dear me, what a righteous young man you are!" which does the following passage (paragraphs 127-129) mainly add to the development of the text. The correct option is A.

How does the story The Most Dangerous Game end?

But that's a little murky at the story's conclusion. After killing Zaroff, Rainsford takes refuge in his bed. There is no indication of his escape or his intentions to go back to society. Although we might suppose that he does, he could just as easily take over as the new ruler of Ship Trap Island where Zaroff left off.

The general's black eyes briefly flashed with rage, but it didn't last long, and he quickly returned to his usual pleasantry, saying, "Dear me, what a righteous young man you are! You have my word that I don't act in the manner you propose. That is unimaginably cruel. These are my guests, and I treat them with respect.

Thus, the ideal selection is option A.

Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped
by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean towards each
other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land
itself was desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not
even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than
any sadness-a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the sphinx, a laughter cold as
the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and
incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was
the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild

Answers

The ten phrases and the explanation to each are as follows:

In sentence 2, "black and ominous": This phrase makes it sound as if something terrible is about to happen. In sentence 3, "vast silence": This phrase contains a sense of desolation and loneliness. In sentence 4, "the spirit of it was not even that of sadness": How awful is it to think of a feeling that is darker and deeper than sadness? To think of a place that causes such a feeling is scary, to say the least. In sentence 5, "mirthless": Conveys a sense of irony. Laughter is supposed to be mirthful. When it is not, we can assume the person - and in this case, the wilderness - has ulterior motives. In sentence 5, "smile of the sphinx": This phrase alludes to the mythological creature that smiles enigmatically as it gives someone as riddle to solve. If unable to solve it, the person is eaten by the creature. This is again quite a scary way to describe the forest, as if it is ready to attack. In sentence 5, "laughter cold as the frost": A cold laughter would be threatening, dangerous. In sentence 6, "masterful and incommunicable": Conveys the idea that something is out of reach. In sentence 6, "wisdom of eternity": Something beyond our human comprehension. In sentence 6, "futility of life": Conveys a sense of smallness, insignificance. Our lives are but a fluke in this universe. In sentence 7, "savage, frozen-hearted": This phrase makes us feel helpless in the face of wilderness. We are powerless beings, and nature should be regarded with respect.

Born in 1876, Jack London was an American author who used his own adventurous life as inspiration for his books. The novel "White Fang" is among his most famous works. As usual, the novel conveys the idea that nature is more powerful than man. Those who do not understand that fact are quickly taught a valuable lesson, which may often cost them their lives. "White Fang" was first published in 1906.

In conclusion, the phrases listed above help convey that sense of helplessness and evoke respect toward nature.

After the Compromise of 1877 led to the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, Democrats consolidated control of state legislatures throughout the region, effectively marking the end of Reconstruction.

Southern Black people saw the promise of equality under the law embodied by the 13th Amendment, 14th Amendment and 15th Amendment to the Constitution receding quickly, and a return to disenfranchisement and other disadvantages as white supremacy reasserted itself across the South.

As historian C. Vann Woodward pointed out in a 1964 article about Plessy v. Ferguson, white and Black Southerners mixed relatively freely until the 1880s, when state legislatures passed the first laws requiring railroads to provide separate cars for “Negro” or “colored” passengers.

What kind of language does T. S. Eliot use in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” to describe the city, and how do
these descriptions reflect modernist themes? Cite examples from the poem to support your position in approximately
150 words.

Answers

Answer:

To understand what kind of vocabulary T. S. Eliot employs to describe the city in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and how these descriptions represent modernist themes, one must first understand what these modernist themes are. To summarize what modernist themes are, they are concerned with alienation, transformation, consumerism, and the relativity of truth. Now that we understand it, we can argue that the city's description echoes contemporary concerns in that it frequently asks whether life has any value. It also fosters a sense of solitude, which contributes to a mood of despondency and loss, which is a hallmark of modernism. The poem's first line contains an image that supports the paralysis theme: "Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table," where the night sky of London is likened to a patient etherized on a table. Prufrock will have a drowsy and passive feeling throughout the poem.

Answer: Hopefully, this'll help clear a few things up.

Explanation: In T.S. Elliot's, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", it describes an environment around the narrator that is hellish, isolated, and nerve-racking. The vocabulary used is a bit older and of richer text such as Shakespeare and Dante, which both are mentioned in the poem and used as examples to compare the narrator and his world. As the poem goes on, the narrator describes how he feels that he wishes to say what he means and be able to go about his life without others' judgment of him. The modernist themes of that day were of the need for a change for the better. The man wants to change and make his mark on the world but is too nervous and lacking in confidence.

Andrea Mathews looked at the tiny hat in his hands and felt jumpy.

He walked over to the window and reflected on his beautiful surroundings. He had always loved grey Amsterdam with its lonely, light lakes. It was a place that encouraged his tendency to feel jumpy.

Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Jona Thunder. Jona was a clever coward with brunette hair.

Andrea gulped. He glanced at his own reflection. He was tall with thick eyebrows and wide thighs. His friends saw him as courageous. Once, he had even brought a knowing puppy back from the brink of death.

But not even a special person who had once brought a knowing puppy back from the brink of death, was prepared for what Jona had in store today.

The snow flurried like singing foxes, making Andrea relaxed.

As Andrea stepped outside and Jona came closer, he could see the vigorous glint in his eye.

Jona glared with all the wrath of 7897 wild bored bears. He said, in hushed tones, "I hate you and I want a fight."

Andrea looked back, even more relaxed and still playing with the tiny hat. "Lets do this," he replied.

They looked at each other with confident feelings, like two hard, hungry guys looking for a fight.

Andrea stepped forward and as he did his hat transformed into a sword.

Jona looked surprised, but he didnt let the surprise weapon stop him from drawing out his own sword.

And then the fight began.

Answer:

Me and my girl friend, Vanessa, collect odd things.

When I say odd, I mean disturbing. Glass jars full of pickled snakes, fish, slugs, and any other gross creature we happen to like. We have bones scattered everywhere around our house in the forms of jewelry, wall pieces, art, statues, ect. We have dead taxidermy mice, snakes, squirrels, and even a cat that used to be Vanessa's. We don't pickle or taxidermy them ourselves, we just find them from scary estate sales, antique sales, or stores.

One day, while looking for an anniversary gift for Vanessa, I came across a black magic shop. I know she likes the concept of black magic, and very creepy things, so I decided to go in. The shop smelled like old socks and cloves, and it was dark. There were books of all kinds, spices, jars, sage sticks, and different charms around the entire store. As I was looking around the store, a man comes out from the back of the shop, holding a box full of bottles.

"Can I help you with anything?" The man asked, and I nodded.

"Uh, yeah, my girl friend and I have been together for about 5 years, and I was looking for an anniversary gift for her. Got any ideas for me? She really likes odd things, ya' know?"

He nods, and beckons me over to the counter. I put down the jar I was examining, and walk over. He disappears into the back again, and comes back out with a doll that is made out of wood.

"Does she like dolls? Maybe she'll like to have Karlie. I've been looking for a home for her for many years, but well... You know the stigma of scary looking dolls. She isn't haunted, I promise, just a little odd looking."  He explained, and I was ecstatic. Yeah, the doll looked scary, but the scarier the better, honestly. It means Vanessa would like it even more. It's head was very round, with painted rosy cheeks and dark painted on eyes. It's nose and ears were sticking out, and it's hair was made of yarn.

"Oh, my God. She'll love it. She has an entire room at home full of weird dolls and such. Thank you so much sir! How much?" I asked, pulling out my wallet.

"Oh, no. You don't have to pay anything. Karlie here has been living in my shop for so long, she's free. Take her." He said, smiling at the doll then holding her out for me. "You take good care of her now," he says. "If you ever need her repaired, just bring her back here. I'll do it for free."

I was a little shocked by how nice he was being, but nodded in agreement. "Of course. My girl friend takes care of all her stuff."

Later that evening, after we had dinner and went on a well deserved date night, it was time for me to give her the gift.

"Hey, I got you something." I said, and picked up the shoe box from the floor beside the couch, and handed it to her.

"Oh, thank you, Kevin! I love it so, so much!" She said after she opened it, flinging her arms around me. "What's her name?"

"Karlie. The man at the store called her Karlie. She'll look good with the rest of your collection, huh?" I asked, and she nodded enthusiastically, hugging the doll to her chest.

"I love you, Kevin," She said, and I smiled.

That night, she decided to sleep with the doll in our room, and I had no objections. I was just so glad that she loved it, I didn't care what she did with it. She can be hard to shop for, since she's already seen everything weird and has everything she could want.

But, later that night, I swore I could hear a baby crying. I woke up to hear Vanessa talking quietly, and a baby crying so loud that it was almost ear splitting.

"Shh, shh, it's okay Karlie, I know he gave you away, but I'm gonna take good care of you." My heart stopped. You'd think someone who collects the most odd things imaginable would be used to scary things happening, but really, that's not true. This has never happened before. Watching my girl friend talk to a crying doll that I swear wasn't alive earlier is one of the weirdest things that has ever happened. Ever.

"Vanessa? Why are you talking to the doll?" I asked, she looked at me like I was a dunce.

"Her father just gave her away like that. The man who created her, the shop owner." She explained to me, cradling the wooden baby.

Instead of freaking out, like any sane person would, I just nodded. I nodded and let her cradle that baby, and act like it was real. I heard it too, so she's not the only one. I never even really questioned it after a while, just kind of went with it.

I don't exactly remember when we started treating it like a real baby, but it just sort of happened. Vanessa wanted the doll to keep from getting mad, so she gave her the best life she possibly could. And I just went with it. I mean, what else could you do?  So that is how we became parents. Of a wooden doll.
