Answer: Title: What we all say

One day I woke up from a dream,

Still scared it would seem,

wondering what I want in life,

considering slitting my throat with a knife,

I don't deserve anything here,

to take my own life I fear,

no one understands me,

for my heart, locked away with no key.

I wish someone would hear my silent cries for help,

If I were a vegetable I would be kelp,

No one likes me,

I'm just trying to make you see,

You ask me how I am, and I say "ok",

But isn't that what we all say?

The evidence for harmony in the family may not be obvious in some households. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of sullen teenagers locked in their room after endless family rows.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly reveals that their family life is more harmonious than it has even been in the past: more than half of 13 to 18-year-olds get on with their brothers and sisters; and one in three has not argued with their parents during the past 12 months. 85 percent of 13 to 18-year-olds agree with the statement “I am happy with my family life,” while a majority said their lives were “happy”, “fun” and “carefree”. Only one in ten said they definitely did not get on with their parents.

“We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They are expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There is more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to participate in the family decision-making process. They do not want to rock the boat”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends rather than subordinates. There are actual statements to back this up. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and make compromises,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I am going out clubbing, or which girl I am going out with. As long as they know what I am doing, they are fine with it.”

Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation... or you might have called it bribery. But as long as I had done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that. I don’t think they were that flexible with their children.” But maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that ideas of adolescence being a difficult time are not rooted in real facts. A psychologist comments, “Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were identified as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been smooth transition from helping out with the family business to taking it over.”

“The present generation has grown up in a period of economic growth, and as a result teenagers appear to believe much more in individualism and self-reliance than in the past. That has contributed to their confidence in the fairness of life, and thus a general peace within the family unit.”

But is life really fair? Nine out of ten young people think “if you work hard enough, you will get just rewards.” However, some recognized that this was not actually inevitable – and not always fair. “If you have fewer opportunities and live in an inner city,” one 15-year-old boy told researchers, “you have got to work 110 percent. Otherwise you can work 50 percent and get away with it.”

But greater family stability has to be a good place for young people to start out in life, and the findings of the study support this. In spite of some gloomy forecasts about the decline of the family, the future looks good!

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.
How does the author develop the idea that humanity’s early fire-starting tools may have been dangerous? Please explain on three to five sentences, using evidence from the text to support your answer.

Answers

Answer:

1. The purpose of the line "In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match..." is to imply the main idea of the article. The statement that we can easily kindle fire today implies that there was a time when it wasn't so easy. That is why people had to figure out a way to kindle a fire without looking for a natural source. All of this supports the article's main idea, that match was a brilliant invention, which we shouldn't take for granted.

2. This line shows the need for matches. People had troubles with finding the fire, but it got even harder because any fire can easily get extinguished. This proves there was an urgent need to find a way to kindle fire without having to resort to nature at all times. The line doesn't show how dependable nature is - on the contrary, it shows that humans had to find a way to not depend on it. It doesn't show how people got the fire, or how long it took to make matches.

3. The correct answer is thesaurus. It is not an encyclopedia or an ordinary dictionary, but a dictionary of synonyms, that is words with similar meanings. It also contains antonyms (words with opposite meanings) and words with related meanings. When we don't know what a word means, we use a dictionary or an encyclopedia (or Wikipedia, for that matter). However, when we know its meaning, but are looking for a more appropriate word, we use a thesaurus.

How does Guy de Maupassant create suspense and surprise at the end?

Answers

This question is incomplete. Here is the complete question:

Reflect on your reading of Guy de Maupassant's "An Uncomfortable Bed" by answering the following questions about the mood and tone of the work. Consider the end of the story. How does Guy de Maupassant create suspense and surprise at the end?

Answer:

Guy de Maupassant manages to create an atmosphere of humor and suspense since the story from the beginning is humorous, however for him it is a serious situation and he does not know what will happen next.

Explanation:

The author throughout the story has the reader wondering what will happen next, even though everything that happens ends up being hilarious.

He is in his room in the dark, which creates an atmosphere of suspense but never abandons his humorous tone.

In case the protagonist's friends were very pranksters and he could even hear their laughter in the corridor since he enters the room and closes it.

The suspense is so much about "what a joke could happen next" that in the end, the disaster ends up being made by the protagonist himself.

Answer:The author creates suspense by providing possible scenarios of what may happen. The narrator examines the room in great detail, and the reader gets a sense that something can happen at any moment. The room becomes quiet and dark and, even as he goes to sleep, the narrator is convinced something will happen. Instead of immediately telling readers what happens when the narrator wakes up, the author provides ambiguous details. “I stretched out my hand to find out what was the nature of this object. I felt a face, a nose, and whiskers which made me jump straight out of the soaked sheets, and rush in my nightshirt into the corridor, the door of which I found open.”

Explanation: the narrator shares that he actually caused the whole incident to happen.
