Victory Lap by George Saunders

Sorry to be so predictable, but I do love George Saunders. With this story, and the rest of the collection it comes from, Tenth of December, he was clearly taking his gifts for voice, character, and satire, and pushing himself to do something much harder and more humane. This story starts awkwardly, in tune with its two gangly teenage protagonists, and stutters through a lovely character study to suddenly burst into an action tale and an unlikely outbreak of heroism. It also offers a dazzling response to the writer’s dilemma of whether to move to a happy ending or a sad ending. On the last page, you can see Saunders looking at the options he has created for himself and simply opening his hands a little wider and saying, ‘Yes, we’ll have both of those

Read the passage from an article about gravity.

Imagine riding in an elevator to the top floor of a very tall building. At the top, the cables supporting the car break, causing the car and you to fall to the ground. (In this example, we discount the effects of air friction on the falling car.) Since you and the elevator car are falling together, you feel like you are floating inside the car. In other words, you and the elevator car are accelerating downward at the same rate due to gravity alone. If a scale were present, your weight would not register because the scale would be falling too. The ride is lots of fun until you get to the bottom! NASA calls this floating condition microgravity. The condition is experienced in orbit and in transit between planetary bodies.

Which words used in the passage are domain-specific terms?

Select all that apply.
elevator
accelerating
orbit
microgravity

Answers

Answer:

Orbit

Microgravity

Explanation:

A word is said to be domain specific if such vocabulary is directly related or inclined very closely to a certain subject or knowledge domain. Each subject or field of knowledge has it's own domain specific vocabulary which are only used often when speaking within the specific field of study. The passage above speaks within the context of boundaries of teh physical universe called space. Space related vocabularies include words associated with the universe and planetary bodies including cosmos, galaxy, Microgravity, orbit, the planets and so on.

The words elevator and accelerating aren't domain specific as they are widely used in other domains including physics, engineering and other fields.

Memories of a Memory

Have you ever witnessed something amazing, shocking or surprising and found when describing the event that your story seems to change the more you tell it? Have you ever experienced a time when you couldn't really describe something you saw in a way that others could understand? If so, you may understand why some experts think eyewitness testimony is unreliable as evidence in scientific inquiries and trials. New insights into human memory suggest human memories are really a mixture of many non-factual things.

First, memory is vague. Imagine your room at home or a classroom you see every day. Most likely, you could describe the room very generally. You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations. But the image you describe will never be as specific or detailed as if you were looking at the actual room. Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details. So when a witness tries to identify someone, her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people. There are lots of different kinds of "tall."

Second, memory uses general knowledge to fill in gaps. Our brains reconstruct events and scenes when we remember something. To do this, our brains use other memories and other stories when there are gaps. For example, one day at a library you go to quite frequently, you witness an argument between a library patron and one of the librarians. Later, when telling a friend about the event, your brain may remember a familiar librarian behind the desk rather than the actual participant simply because it is recreating a familiar scene. In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story.

Third, your memory changes over time. It also changes the more you retell the story. Documented cases have shown eyewitnesses adding detail to testimony that could not have been known at the time of the event. Research has also shown that the more a witness's account is told, the less accurate it is. You may have noticed this yourself. The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add, or what your brain wants to add, to the account. You may also notice that you drop certain details from previous tellings of the story.

With individual memories all jumbled up with each other, it is hard to believe we ever know anything to be true. Did you really break your mother's favorite vase when you were three? Was that really your father throwing rocks into the river with you when you were seven? The human brain may be quite remarkable indeed. When it comes to memory, however, we may want to start carrying video cameras if we want to record the true picture.

Though the novel opens with a literal collision, it depicts a number of figurative collisions as well--cultural, racial, natural, familial, marital, and others. Describe some of these collisions, and discuss why they happen.

Answers

This question seems to be incomplete. However, there is enough information to find the right answer.

Answer:

The main "collision" in this story is driven by racial discrimination, portrayed by the unexpected bigotry that slowly surfaces in Delaney´s actions. He who has begun denouncing his neighbors' racist ideas ends up revealing his perception of Mexican immigrants as disruptive to his way of life.

There are also several examples of figurative collisions that represent gender biases and violence against women, such as America being assaulted by José Navidad, which is not only a perceived fear but an acute possibility for women regardless of their social status. At the same time, America suffers abuse from Cándido, because all his frustration and anger can not be thrown back at those who do him wrong, so violence against his wife is an easy way to release that anger.

Explanation:

The question refers to "The Tortilla Curtain," by T. Coraghessan Boyle which begins with Delaney and Kyra, a white man from a wealthy neighborhood, hitting Cándido, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, with his car.
