What is synthesis?
defining important concepts in a text
taking apart a text to see how it works
summarizing main ideas in your own words
combining different ideas to say something new

Answers

Synthesis is the opposite of analysis. When you analyze, you break a whole into its parts and examine how the parts relate to one another in order to judge the quality of the whole. When you synthesize, you start with different, unrelated parts, and search out relationships in order to put the parts together to make a new whole. You synthesize automatically when you read, as you relate “new” text information to previous knowledge and create the new “whole” of your knowledge in a field. Synthesis becomes more of a conscious act when you write, since you have to actively select pieces of information that make sense together. As The American Heritage Dictionary states, synthesis means “the combining of separate elements or substances to form a coherent whole.”

The concept of a “coherent whole” is essential to synthesis. When you synthesize in writing, you examine different types of information (ideas, examples, statistics, etc., from different sources) and different themes (perspectives and concepts) from different sources with the purpose of blending them together to help explain one main idea. So you have to look for relationships 1) among the sources’ themes and 2) between these themes and your own ideas in order to blend all of the pieces to make a coherent whole.

The concept of a “coherent whole” is important in terms of language, too. Once you examine content and choose the parts to synthesize, you need to express those parts in your own language in order to create a coherent whole in terms of writing style.

Synthesis is like combining different ingredients to make a stew. If you choose and combine carefully, with the end result (supporting your main idea) in mind, the ingredients will be both separate and well-blended, with all ingredients contributing as they should to the final taste.

1. Compare and contrast Utilitarianism and Deontology over the question of torture. Is torture a
reasonable/justifiable last resort during a national security crisis? What would a Utilitarian (like Bentham)
argue? What would Kant argue? What is your opinion? When discussing your opinion, you should also
include a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of both the utilitarian and deontological positions.

Answers

Answer:

- Compare and contrast Utilitarianism and Deontology over the question of torture.

Utilitarianism revolves around the concept of “the end justifies the means,” while deontology works on the concept “the end does not justify the means.” Utilitarianism is the principle that the correct form of action be taken to benefit the greatest number of people.  Deontology is defined as the area of ethics involving the responsibility, moral duty and commitment. Both utilitarianism and deontology deal with the ethics and consequences of one’s actions and behavior despite the outcome.

- Is torture a reasonable/justifiable last resort during a national security crisis?

Torture and abusive interrogation tactics are illegal under U.S. law, international law, and international human rights treaties. Torture is prohibited under federal law, as are lesser forms of detainee abuse such as cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment is prohibited at all times and in all circumstances.

- What would a Utilitarian (like Bentham) argue? What would Kant argue?

A Utilitarianism such as Jeremy Bentham, he would argue that an action (or type of action) is right if it tends to promote happiness or pleasure and wrong if it tends to produce unhappiness or pain—not just for the performer of the action but also for everyone else affected by it. Kant would say that the only virtue that can be unqualifiedly good is a good will. Kant argues that a person is good or bad depending on the motivation of their actions and not on the goodness of the consequences of those actions.

- What is your opinion? When discussing your opinion, you should also include a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of both the utilitarian and deontological positions.

I agree with Bentham's argument because, broadly speaking, Bentham would first consider the outcomes of both actions and evaluate how much pleasure or pain either action will cause, while Kant would consider the action of killing someone and evaluate if the action is morally “right” or “wrong. Bentham’s argument that protecting the welfare (happiness) of the greatest number of people, I suggest, will ultimately win out because we live in an era when governments and electorates subscribe to neoliberal economic ideologies. Bentham’s greatest happiness theory will enable the business, industry and education sectors to open-up for business as normal. Of course politics and self-protection will dictate how quickly normalcy is resumed, but the need to bring happiness to the maximum number of people will ultimately determine the strategy of government because elections are determined by the greater number of voters who feel happiest, not by the greater number of voters who are morally and ethically driven as Kant's theory suggests.

Read the passage and study the image from Sugar Changed the World.

Slaves were given long, sharp machetes, which would be their equipment—but for some also their weapons—until the harvest was done. The cutters worked brutal, seemingly endless shifts during the harvest—for the hungry mills crushed cane from four in the afternoon to ten the next morning, stopping only in the midday heat. Slaves had to make sure there was just enough cane to feed the turning wheels during every one of those eighteen hours. They worked in teams, a man slashing the cane, a woman binding every twelve stalks into a bundle. According to one report from 1689, each pair of workers was expected to cut and bind 4,200 stalks a day. Exactly how much they cut depended on how much their mill could handle—the cutting must never get a day ahead of the grinding, for then the sugar cane would dry up.

Enslaved people working on a sugar cane plantation. Some people are cutting the cane, others bundle the cane, and another group place the bundles in wagons.

In this illustration by William Clark, enslaved people cut sugar cane.

How does the illustration best help the reader understand the text?

The illustration helps the reader recognize how teams cut and bundled sugar cane.
The illustration helps the reader determine why sugar cane had to be cut so quickly.
The illustration helps the reader observe the hot weather on sugar plantations.
The illustration helps the reader identify sugar-harvesting techniques still used today.

Answers

Answer:

The illustration best helps the reader understand the text because:

A. The illustration helps the reader recognize how teams cut and bundled sugar cane.

Explanation:

"Sugar Changed the World" is a book by authors Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos first published in 2010. The book dives deeply into the history of people and countries and its connection with sugar. It shows how sugar left a bloody trail behind in order to be produced and exported.

After reading the passage and reading the description of the illustration, we can safely say the illustration's purpose is to show how teams of slaves worked while preparing the sugar cane. One team cuts it, the other bundles it, and another places the bundles in wagons.

write a essay on the road ahead after the pandamic gets over (200 words).

Answers

Answer:ok so

After the pandemic people will start going back to public places without masks  and now with the vaccine available some places  are going to be requiring people to be vaccinated.  Eventually it won't matter just like other diseases and sicknesses before.

For  example, some airports will need vaccinated people as  well as  businesses or schools, because younger people still do not have a vaccine. Teachers are being vaccinated  and still have to wear all Face protection. You might question why not do remote learning but the reasoning for this is because some people want to know whether the children are safe, some homes are not safe.

Some businesses who had decided that online businesses are too much will now decide More based on if they are experienced during the pandemic. A lot of people are able to get jobs however some people at this point realized perhaps they shouldn't work because they are okay leaving on government checks.

a. prepares/ will decorate
b. will prepare/ decorates
c. prepare/ decorate
d. prepare/ will decorate

Answers

Answer:

d. prepare/ will decorate

Explanation:

To answer this question it is helpful to break it into two separate parts. First, figure out which form of to prepare should be used. Remember that verbs must match the number of subjects. In this case, the subjects are plural because it is both Caroline and Sue. This means that "prepare" must be used because it is the verb that fits a plural subject.

Then, you need to understand what conjugation of to decorate that is needed. The second part of the sentence is conditional because it is dependant on what happens in the first part. It is also future tense because it hasn't happened yet. Therefore, "will decorate" is correct because it is the future conditional conjugation of the infinitive.

This means that d is the final answer.
